Following four years of teaching at Lodi Academy, during which she completed an M.Mus. in music education at the College of the Pacific, she accepted an invitation to teach at Pacific Union College in 1956. Howard taught piano, music history, and music education at PUC, a position she held until her retirement at age 67. When she retired as an associate professor in 1973, she was honored with the rank of emeritus professor.
