Lloyd B. Mallory

Lloyd B. Mallory, Jr., is Minister of Music and Worship at Sligo Church in Takoma Park, Maryland, a position he has held since 2006. Previous to this appointment, he was choral director at Oakwood College, where he had taught since 1996.

During his tenure as director of the Aeolians, OC's premier choral ensemble, Mallory enjoyed great success, beginning with conducting the group in several key appearances during the climax of OC's centennial year. Part of that celebration included preparing the Aeolians and College Choir for a performance of a significant choral work with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 1996. The success of that presentation led to a repeat performance the following year, with Mallory singing as soloist, a performance that ended with a six-minute standing ovation.

During the next four years, the Aeolians under his leadership sang at the White House and the Crystal Cathedral, toured in the Caribbean, and made a CD. Beginning in 2001, he took a doctoral study leave that continued until 2004, when he returned to OC to resume his choral conducting duties.

Mallory, a native of Washington, D.C., attended Pine Forge Academy before going to OC, where he graduated with a music degree in 1989. While at OC, he served as student associate conductor of the Aeolians, which was led by John Dennison, and served as an accompanist in the department. An accomplished flutist, he played principal flute in the University of Alabama in Huntsville Wind Ensemble and was piccolo player in the Huntsville Youth Orchestra.

Following graduation, he returned to PFA, where he served as music director for seven years. While there, his choir was invited to perform for the 104th Congressional Prayer Service and President Clinton's Prayer Breakfast. Under his leadership, the PFA choir placed first in the Quaker Oats Gospel Competition for the Philadelphia area and was awarded $25,000.

While teaching at PFA, Mallory completed an M.A. in 1994 at Morgan State University in choral conducting. A second master's degree was subsequently also completed at MSU. He completed a DMA in choral and instrumental conducting at the University of California in Los Angeles in 2006.
