Ann Shrewsbury Hankinson teaches piano and classes at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1992, she was named Composer of the Year during the Utah Arts Festival Competition. Besides receiving a cash award, Hankinson was commissioned to compose a work to be performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra in June of that year.

A 1966 graduate of Pacific Union College, Hankinson received her Ph.D. in musical theory and composition from the University of California, San Diego, in 1982, the second woman to earn that degree from that school.
