Estelle Jorgensen is Professor of Music Education in the School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she teaches graduate courses in the foundations of music education. During her time at IU, she has served as chair of the music education department and is presently editor of the Philosophy of Music Education Review. Prior to going to IU, Jorgensen was chair of the School Music Department and Professor of Music, Faculty of Music, at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
Hailed as one of the most respected leaders in music education, she is a frequent contributor to leading research journals in music education and is author of In Search of Music Education, 1997, and Transforming Music Education, 2003. The first book has been described as "provocative and stimulating . . . [a] work that secures the Jorgensen’s position in the elite league of the few who truly challenge problems facing music education." Her latest book has been praised as ""Brilliant . . . 2Jorgenson has given numerous lectures in the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Australia on many aspects of music education. The founding chair of the Philosophy Special Research Interest Group of MENC (Music Educators National Conference), she has also led and contributed to five international symposia in the philosophy of music education in the past thirteen years.
Jorgensen was born in Australia and completed a B.A. with honors at Newcastle University in 1967. She completed a M.Mus. at Andrews University in 1970 and a Ph.D. at the University of Calgary, Canada, in 1976. In recognition of her contributions to music education, she was named a Fellow in the Philosophy of Music Education Society and awarded an honorary doctorate in music by Andrews University.
