Daniel Gil-Marca
1977 -
Daniel Gil-Marca, a composer, conductor, and teacher has had a remarkable career since graduating from the University of California, Riverside, less than a decade ago. In that time he has taught both music and history, been the recipient of several major scholarship awards, completed a master's degree in composition at a prestigious school of music and is now pursuing a doctorate at another. He has also composed a number of works.
Gil-Marca graduated with a degree in history at La Sierra University and then continued study at UC Riverside, where he completed a B.Mus. in 2004. During this time he also taught history and directed the string and choral program at Redlands Adventist Academy.
In 2005 he was one of ten chosen from 1,200 applicants nationwide to receive a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Award of up to $300,000 for continued music study, the result of a UC Riverside faculty nomination and his prevailing in the competition that followed. He enrolled at Eastman School of Music for graduate study in 2005, where he was awarded the Edna McLaughlin and Paul Sacher awards, and completed a master's degree in composition in 2008.
Gil-Marca is presently pursuing graduate study at the Peabody Conservatory of Music at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is the recipient of the Morawetz Memorial Award in composition. He is an active composer and has had several commissions from notable organizations including the Peabody Opera Company, National Performing Arts Company, University of California, Keith Rivers Films, LLC, and others.
Gil-Marca's music reflects the heritage of five generations of Bolivian Indian and Mexican ancestors. His musical experiences started at age five with piano lessons in classical music, composing music at age nine, and continuing with a teenage fascination with jazz. As a consequence, his music is a creative mix of musical genres, styles, and idioms. He describes himself as "above all, an American composer."
His teachers have included Michael Hersch, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Carlos Sánchez-Gutiérrez, Allan Schindler, David Liptak, and Robert Morris. Other experiences include private lessons and master classes with Chinary Ung, Christopher Theofanidis, and Christopher Rouse, and the influence of conducting mentors Brad Lubman (orchestra) and Donald Neuen (choral).
Gil-Marca is married to Alicia Diaz Gil, a former concert pianist from Spain. They reside in Los Angeles and have two children, Sophia and Alexander.
