Barbara Jean Platt Gatewood

 

Barbara Gatewood, a contralto, taught in both the Seventh-day Adventist and public school systems in South Dakota, New York, and Michigan. She and her husband, Guy Larry, both taught at Pine Ridge Mission in South Dakota for a decade.

Barbara completed a B.A. in music at Houghton College and an M.Mus., magna cum laude, at Andrews University in 1964. While at AU, she was the contralto soloist in a production of the Messiah in 1961. She taught at nearby Andrews Academy from 1963 to 1966 and also taught in church schools in Benton Harbor and Niles, Michigan, and at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School.

Now retired and living in Coalmont, Tennessee, the Gatewoods are active in their local community-services center and assist in teaching at Cumberland Heights Elementary School. She continues to teach piano lessons and classroom music in the local church school.
