Aurie O. Johnson

1884 - 1914

Aurie Johnson, pioneer music teacher, taught music at Beechwood Academy, later Indiana Academy, in the first decade of the 20th century. Born near Rockford, Indiana, she became a Seventh-day Adventist at age nine.

A talented pianist and singer, she taught music in her hometown until she accepted a position to teach music at BA in 1908, at age 22. The school had been open only six years when she arrived, and living and teaching conditions were arduous. She left two years later, when her health failed.

After she recuperated, she attended a chiropractic school and was practicing that profession when she died from an explosion of kerosene while starting a fire. She was thirty years old at the time of her death.
